Break up dirt when transplanting house plants?

Update:

When repotting a plant from the container you bought it in, the roots and dirt are all compacted down. Should you keep it like that and just add little extra dirt to new pot, or should you crumble up the packed dirt and roots, loosen them up as you replant into the new container?

Yes..wee bit..let the plant & its roots breathe..tip plant up side down..and,just claw at the roots with your fingers..loosening them as well.~ add dirt accordingly..fresh potting soil at the bottom,as well top..sprinkle add as you feel.~*
