Why aren't there any good wifi antennas available?

There are many, some home made, some commercial made. The issue is many off-shore vendors make false claims as to the actual gain of the antenna. Also, antennas come with different "patterns", and an antenna for one purpose will not work well for another purpose.

There are plenty and you can make your own that will grab a signal for hundreds of yards.
