Does this actually increase wifi speed?

My mom placed some sort of metallic spring around the long thingies of the router thinking it'll increase wifi speed. In reality, I noticed a drop in downloading/uploading speed. What are your thoughts about this and does it actually increase wifi speed?

A lot of those are simple "reflectors" to help direct the radio signal in a specific direction, at the expense of other directions. All they can do is, maybe, just maybe, improve the signal a bit to give a more reliable wifi connection. It cannot affect the speed much, unless a stronger signal lets the wifi adapter connect at a higher speed.

In your case, an improperly installed "device" on the antenna will actually make the signal weaker in your direction.

Those are all "gimmicks" of sorts. Some (a few) help in specific situations, the rest are a waste of time and money...
