What variety of turnip is sold in supermarkets?

When I see market turnips they are purple on top and yellow on the bottom. But seed catalogs only have purple on top and WHITE on the bottom. I am confused. I want to grow yellow turnip.

If I you want yellow turnips, look under "rutabagas" in seed catalogs.

Rutabagas are a yellow turnip type also known as "swedes" or "yellow turnips."

The white turnips with purple at the top of the root are known as "Purple Top White Globe" turnips or simply as "Purple Tops."

It's the same turnip. They turn yellow as they age; it just means they're not fresh.
