Karate and the 2020 Olympics, what are your thoughts and opinions on this topic, is this good for Karate or not? All opinions are respected.?
Yes but it was a two in one question before so I thought I would simply make this ONE question. Good eye JoKuoNim :)
The sad thing is it has already been approved in 2020 in Tokyo, so its not a matter of it happening as it is going too, but whether it is a good idea or not remains to be seen... I personally believe it will water down what McDojos have already done taking away more of the Budo of the art. What do you all feel it will do to Karate when this happens?

It would be horrible - it ruined Taekwondo.
However, it would not likely happen, either. First off, Taekwondo and Karate would appear to be too similar, so, IOC committee would not likely allow it. On the other hand, Olympic Taekwondo is only sparring. So if the Karate organization were to put up a referrendum to get into the Olympics, they could choose self-defense, breaking, weapon/weaponless, or forms, then they might have a shot.
One of the problems with Taekwondo is that the Koreans keep winning. This is bad for the sport, and keeps TKD in jeopardy: IOC rules stipulate that one criteria for a sport to be in the Olympics is that the sport can't be particular to a single country. If Korea doesn't win as often, Taekwondo wouldn't be in jeopardy. It is amazing to me that Wrestling was bounced from the Olympics, and Taekwondo was kept - despite Wrestling not ever having been associated with a single country, and the fact that it is one of the more traditional sports in the Olympics. Although that has changed, it remains that Taekwondo is once again in jeopardy.

wasn't this or very similar question asked a few days ago?
And No Karate would not be in the Olympics. For many reasons. Some of it being if TKD is eliminated why would they add a similar sport. Another being Karate is more martial art not martial sport. TKD is martial sport. And there are a few other things as well. And then tha point system used and what you can and can not do. This would have to be defined clearly long before such would happen. And another thing it should be tried as a exhibition sport in Olympics first before it gets into the program. This is how TKD got in. By the hosting country having a exhibition sport you expose people to it before it becomes a part of it.
Plus it similarity to TKD makes it hard to separate the 2 and justify why it should be included.

Ya, thats not happening.
There are three criteria to bean Olympic sport the first one is that it needs to be represented by a single international organization. which will never happen in karate.
That is one thing the Koreans had down pat, they organized into one organization and made there instructors an Olympic coach.
Edit:>
Shotokan and shotokai is only a small part of all the styles of karate.
I sat on the board of directors of 3 organization And in meetings with several others over the last few decades, they all said this would be the year for karate in the Olympics and it never happened. It wasnt even close.

as long as it is karate and not ultimate fighting, it should just fine. It is like 3 points and you win. Just like the karate that was in the original Karate Kid. NOT the fighting that was in The Karate Kid pt2. That was real fighting. Respectful karate with lots of etiquette is fine for the Olympics
