Why does it seem that nobody holds parents responsible for the adult content their children have access to?

Of course, some day another kid is going to show them something they got their hands on, but is it really asking too much for parents to learn how to use parental controls? Don't use poor parenting as a way to villianize pornography.

Update:

Gender Studies: Don't move my question, please.

Update 2:

The question is about the villianization of pornography and I'm asking in this section for a reason.

Why should I have to buy and maintain porn-blocking products in order to keep the most graphic images imaginable from being piped straight to my child's computer screen?

Why must I opt out (at the additional expense of filtering products) of having pornography and graphic violence readily available for my children to view?

"Why does it seem that nobody holds parents responsible for the adult content their children have access to?"

It doesn't seem to me like that at all, because personally, I believe that parents are equally responsible for their children's behavior, or in this case, access to porn.

These days children are having increasing access to media [porn or otherwise], so it's equally increasingly difficult for parents to keep tabs on them.

Personally, I've come across some truly disturbing stuff on the internet in the past few months, and since our daughter wants to use our computer/laptop/tablet/phones all the time, we have a family policy of switching off the internet after, say, 10 PM. We also blocked her data plan. But this isn't always helping, though. And I can guarantee that within a few months she's going to understand what we are doing and will figure out a way of circumventing out blocks.

" but is it really asking too much for parents to learn how to use parental controls?" -- No, it's not asking for too much. It's parental responsibility to ensure such access to porn is minimal at home [they can't be policing their kid everywhere they go], until a time when the kid has grown up a little.

So is the adult content that you are referring to solely in regards to pornography? If so. . . pornography is not bad as a whole. However a parent's role in regards to pornography and their children would be to explain that pornography is along the same lines as cartoons and movies. . . just story lines being acted out and not how reality truly is. Also point out that many of the females within pornography have lived horrific lives. . . sexual molestation, rape, drugs. In other words, especially in the case of male children, to make sure they understand that pornography is not to be looked upon as advice for how to conduct oneself in a relationship or towards a female. Bottom line; the average girl in reality is nothing like the average girl in porn.

Think of it this way. The less taboo/sexual porn becomes then the stigma around it will become less. ergo porn will become less a dirty thing and a less sexual society. Like in Africa and such, the human naked body isn't as sexualized and nakedness is OK. As this generation grows up sex will Hopefully be less of a taboo thing and more of just a human function to procreate.

Okay, but to be fair, the amount of stuff that parents need to protect their children from has increased exponentially in just one or two generations. It would be nice if we addressed this. The passive acceptance of Internet porn by our society is just perplexing to me.

Any moderately tech savvy kid can get around most blocks - and even if they're unsure, the answer is usually a google search away
