Has anyone here gone to a counselor or therapist for anxiety or depression? Did it help?

Update:

I've had depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember. The anxiety is particularly troubling right now. I see a psychiatrist and take Paxil, Buspar and sometimes Xanax when the anxiety is really bad. I also worked in mental health for about 25 years (administrative job) and I'm very skeptical of counselors, psychologist and the like. Is it really any more useful than just talking to a trusted friend? But I'm willing to give it a try since this anxiety is just too much.
