Can black lights harm an animal's eyes?

My dad suggested putting a black light in my room for Halloween, but I have two guinea pigs and a cat. I was wondering, would the black light harm their eyes? I don't want to risk hurting them.

It depends upon how strong the UV light is and at what frequency.

But yes, exposure to UV light sources can cause cataracts and the effects depend upon the length of exposure (damage is cumulative), the UV wavelength, and the intensity of the UV light.

But the type of black light you refer to is likely fine, especially if it's not on all the time. Your cat is presumably free to enter and leave the room and if it's like most cats will have it's eyes closed most of the time sleeping and you can play safe and put an opaque fabric cover such as a towel over the guinea pig cage.

It's safe. It's the same as any other light, the bulb won't be doing any harm.
