I have a John Deere 317 that only starts with a jump off of another battery, the battery in the tractor is charged.?

    I'd bet when you hook up the jumper cables you put the positive one on the battery and the ground on something other then the battery terminal. My guess would be that the cables are dirty or there is corrosion where the ground strap is bolted to the frame.

    If you have to jump start it, then the battery is not sufficiently charged. It probably has a small alternator so it will take a while (running) to fully charge.
