To truly understand Son Goku aka Sun Wukong, you have to read the original novel Journey to the west or, as a suggestion, see the drama series on Journey to the west (there are many over the years from Taiwan, Hong Kong or China). This novel was written in China some 1,000 years ago and the character was taken by Japanese to make the series Dragonballz.
This movie The monkey king was a small part of it, primarily on how Son Goku created chaos in heaven.
