Wii U backwards compatibility question?
So I think it's common knowledge that the Wii U can play original Wii games as well as Wii U games. But can it do so straight out of the box, never being connected to the internet? I'm probably the minority of gamers who don't game online and don't have the internet and I'm wondering as I've heard a lot of people say that it requires a patch of sorts to play original Wii games. Is this true? Or can it play them straight out of the box?

The original firmware required a patch, but any you find on the shelves should run Wii games straight out of the box!

While it's HEAVILY RECOMMENDED to get the updates (for best performance), pretty much any Wii U you purchase now will be able to play 99.9% of all Wii games (-0.1% due to some games requiring accessories that used the GCN ports) out of the box without updates.
The Wii U (& most current gen consoles) generally recommend having online connectivity for full enjoyment.

It should play them out of the box, but you will still need a Wii Remote and Nunchuk if required for the game.
Older consoles had to get a system update, but newer systems should already have that patch I would think.
