What do I need to know in terms of formating for Kindle direct publishing (I'm using openoffice) because I need to know to publish

Unfortunately, as far as I know, Open Office cannot export FILTERED HTML which is what Amazon will want. Microsoft Word can output this. Filtered Html strips out much of the garbage you might have shoved in while you were typing (such as forced fonts, forced margins, forced spacing, and other things that could mess up the ebook's display on various size screens and devices).
But maybe you can just be careful what you type and export one of the other formats KDP accepts

Personally, when I finally write an ebook I will either be using the free book writing program yWriter or the non-free popular one I bought, Scrivener, just to make sure I can't accidentally put any Word-like junk in my text.
