How To Copy WIndows 7?

My hard disk is dying. I can get it to run by connecting it to a separate power supply, but it is drawing too much power from the computer's PSU

The computer will not boot if the disk is connected to its PSU, but everything runs ok if the disk is powered externally.

I can run another hard disk in the computer simultaneously. The question is how to copy the Win 7 installation from the defective disk to the new disk.

If there is no easy way to do the copy, is there software for this?

If the hard drive works using a separate power supply then it sound like you need to replace the power supply in your computer. In order to copy your operating system to another drive you need drive cloning or drive imaging software. Most new retail hard drives come with this software either included with the drive or as a free download from the company website. Otherwise you could try one of these programs - http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-cl...

What you need to do is clone the drive. There are many programs out there that can do this for you. I only recommend two of them. The first is a Linux based cloner and it is free. You do need a little experience using these types programs but they do the job. Clonezilla has an excellent help section.

The next one is a Windows based cloner and might be a bit easier for you to use. It is not free but has many more options for you to choose from. I recommend that you burn the boot CD and make the clone using it. It also has excellent help pages.

Make sure that you verify to make sure you get a good clone. With the drive dying you could have problems getting a clean clone of it.

I did not design it, I did not build it, I did not break it, but I am the one who can fix it. What that means is that I have spent a life time taking these things apart and seeing how they are made. The difficult we do right away, the impossible just takes a little longer. I hear voices, so please be quite so I can listen to them.
