how does one put the icon on the desktop?

    right click on the desktop and create a short cut.

    Usually you right click on file/application via the "My Computer" or any File manager and click on "Send to" -> "Desktop (create shortcut)".

    Another method is right clicking a file/app, clicking "create shortcut". Clicking on it and holding it whilst moving it to your desktop.
