In monopoly if you sell a house or hotel will it be for what u bought it or half the price?
When u buy property in monopoly, if you morgage it is half the price. So, shouldn't selling (removing) houses be half the original purchasing price OR full price? I think it's half because the point of the houses is to get profit so why would you buy then get profit and then sell for the buying price? My friend BELIEVES that when you buy and sell a house, it is still 100 dollars in monopoly money. ( 100 purchase, 100 return )
The instruction booklet was lost in the game so the most precise answer is welcomed.

Your friend is dead wrong.
The OFFICIAL rules of the game clearly state, that when you are forced to sell a house or hotel.........you only get HALF their value........the same as mortgaging a property..........which is Always HALF of what you paid for it.
This prevents you from cashing in houses every other turn and moving your assets around the board.
Let's say you own the Light blues, with hotels.....and also own the Green monopoly........
but the opponent misses the light blues.
Well, then you just cash in all your hotels......and buy some houses for the greens......right...??? Since he'll be coming up on those next.
Then when he misses the Greens, you cash those houses in , and buy back your Hotels?
Oh hell no.
That's cheating.
That's why you only get HALF value back as there's a stiff penalty if you try that nonsense.
If you got FULL value back, you could shuffle your assets all day.
It takes much of the STRATEGY out of the game of building WISELY and within your financial means.......without leaving yourself down to your last dollar, that you are forced to sell assets for half price.

"Houses and hotels may be sold back to the Bank at any time for ___one-half___ the price paid for them." This is from the instruction booklet, under SELLING PROPERTY, emphasis is in the original text, not added. Note that reducing a hotel to houses may not be possible if there are insufficient houses in the bank.
Others are saying that they're seeing something different when looking at the instruction booklet. Maybe the rules changed over time?

There are plenty of people who play with it as full price, but the official rules are half price. And I find full price destroys most of the strategy of the game.
