You cannot play PS4 games on your PS3 so if you want to continue playing Playstation games you'll eventually need to upgrade.

You can use your same PSN account from the PS3 on your PS4 but if you want to play online you need to add a PS+ subscription.

Even without a PS4 you really should consider a PS+ subscription even on the PS3 since you get free games every month, and there are regular special sales.
