It was a 1962 Chevy Impala, bought used and given to me by my father in upstate New York. Rode about 3 inches off the ground, 250 HP, roared like a wounded beast when you stepped on the pedal, one time we backed into a driveway and pushed the exhaust pipe up against the bottom of the car. The bottom had been eaten away by years of salt on the road in the wintertime, and was barely there. The tailpipe caught the floor carpet on fire while we were driving home from the movies. Pretty great scene when it burst into flames under my dads feet...

It was a 57 Ford hardtop. I got it cheap and it had lots of miles. The ball joints were shot and I got a mechanic to come to our family garage and do the balljoint job immediately. I watched and I still mravel at the sharpness of his cold chisels. It was a simple hand tool with a hammer but it went through the rivets like butter.
I knew nothing about cars and was always doing unnecessary repairs and imagining the worst.
With a friend, we took the car on a field trip to Tennessee for a few days. It proved perfectly reliable. I gave it a huge gasp in the door against a gas station pipe guard.
When I moved to a more urban parking situation in college, it was reliable enough to require no attention. Cars in those days still had points & condenser. It was a yellow and white two door car. The doors were vastly heavy even for a young man.

1939 Chev. coupe, $39.00 as is. with a chrome swan as a hood ornament. I seem to remember the hood ornament was the best feature. The tires came close to being classified a s racing slicks. Paid cash, no payments which was good back in 1952

My dad gave me a '56 Buick when I was 16. It was old, but had been in storage for most of it's life. I loved it. It was like driving a Sherman tank. My dad said, "you may kill everyone on the road, but you won't be hurt."

Never had a car that was my very own until married about 10 years. Before that had to share with the family (6 people - 2 cars). Early in marriage we had one car we had to share.
