Buying used car, how to arrange inspection w/mechanic?
How do I set it up with a private seller? Do I say "please take it to xyz shop?" and arrange payment to the shop?
I imagine this is annoying to the seller to take time out of their day, is there anything I should factor into such a request? Like if it is only a $2k car, would this be ridiculous to ask them to do?
Thanks.

It's not the sellers responsibility to have the car inspected. That is your responsibility as the buyer to arrange the inspection and to pay for it.
But don't do any inspection until you have decided that this is the car you want to buy and you've agreed to a selling price.
At that point tell the seller that you will buy the car for the agreed upon price as long as the car passes an independent inspection by the mechanic of your choice.
Sign the Biil OF Sale with the stipulation that if the car passes inspection you'll pay the agreed upon price. If the car does not pass inspection then you have to right to refuse the deal or to renegotiate the price based on the information contained in the inspection report.
It is your responsibility to set the inspection appointment, take the car to the shop and pay for the inspection. It should take less than 2 hours and it should cost you about $120 for the inspection.
