Tourism-souvenirs-sports-TV + use the term Holland, so why must people, when a question is asked about Holland insist on a geography lesson?
I agree, North and South Holland are provinces of the Netherlands. However, in Tourism travelers are welcomed to Holland. In the souvenir industry I don't think I have ever seen 'a souvenir of The Netherlands'. In sport most people support Holland. (hup Holland hup). In TV two programmes come to mind 'I love Holland' and, of course, 'Holland's got Talent' I was in no way being detrimental to Nederland (my second home), just always wondered why this is so.

Holland is used as a nickname for the country.
Good enough for sports and for informal use, but the people of the country have chosen a different name for the country and asked the world to use it (allowing for translations of the name as well).
I think it is only good manners to use the name the people of the country prefer rather than the one they use because the world resist learning the proper name.
While I live in the part of the country that is actually named Holland (Noord Holland in my case) I will never introduce myself as 'from Holland' till I notice that others do not understand the name of the country as Nederland or one of its translations.
Just like people in the USA do not call their country 'New England' anymore.

Because Holland is a region of Netherlands and people wrongly use the word to describe the whole country. In my country wrongly we use the word too, instead of the proper name, but my country also is known wrongly by a another name that is far away from the proper one.
