Why are all episodic TV shows soap operas?

Update:

I get that people like to watch TV more than to do things, but there are no shows that are episodic with no continuing story line. None. It's always all or nothing with TV, but isn't it a bit much that there isn't even one show that you can watch and then skip a couple of weeks and then watch and not be out of the loop?

    I think they do it, because they know that people get busy, and if they got too confused about the story line, they'll lose interest!
