My car squeaks when I brake.

I have took it to the garage who say they have put new brake shoes in but it feels the same still and squeaks.

They need to turn the drums on a brake lathe. If it's disk brakes, they need to only apply anti-squeal compound to the backsides or the pads. It always works.

if you have brake drums and shoes then the drum probably needs rubbing with emery paper, over time especially with heat the surface of the drum can become to smooth and shiny, the surface can become smooth and slippery causing a squeak, so use emery paper to roughen the drum.
