California Prop 56 - Opinions on cigarette tax increase?

Surrounding states have higher cigarette taxes than California, which is one of the lowest west of the Mississippi. Prop 55 would make California have the 3rd highest cigarette taxes in the west, after Minnesota and Washington.

Just curious what people think of this. I'm not a fan of smoking. But I lean libertarian on most things, you should be able to take care of yourself without government intervention. And this prop also includes e-cigarettes, which is a major red flag for me.

On the other hand, raising tax rates to be more comparable with surrounding states should discourage smuggling operations. And smokers in general put a monetary burden on the economy due to the increased healthcare costs of continually self-medicating with nicotine.

Your last sentence is the justification for raising the taxes. We are all paying for the longterm health care for people who choose to smoke. I say that as someone who had a family member diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, who went through a year of very expensive treatments that were covered by his insurance through the rates they charged other people. I hope that this tax increase includes a provision that the money go to support health care. I'm not in California so I haven't read about this.

You are correct in raising a red flag when it come to Prop. 56 and e-cigarettes. A YES vote for Prop. 56 is a NO vote for small business. Prop. 56 includes a disproportionate tax on vapor products - an estimated $10 tax on one bottle of e-liquid, compared to a $2 increase on one pack of cigarettes. This disproportionate tax increase will make vapor products so expensive that California’s 3.8 million smokers will be less likely to consider them as alternatives to combustible tobacco. It will also force a majority of the 2,500 vape shops in California to lay off employees, relocate or close down, resulting in a loss of jobs and state sales tax revenue. Prop. 56 doesn't save lives and will ultimately lead former smokers back to smoking cigarettes. VOTE NO on 56!

California needs to quit making so many regulations on cigarettes and tobacco if they are going to ignore marijuana (people smoke that right out in the streets and no one cares so why should it be different with cigs or ecigs?). The 21 or over thing was dumb too because it not only took away cigarettes but e-cigarettes which have been proven healthier and help people quit.

We have the same issue here in Missouri and it turns out Tabacco is pushing for the issue to pass, what it does is eliminates the cheaper brands of smokes here which will run them out of business and turn people back to the premium brands which cost more. Most issues say it goes to health care but if you look it goes in the general fund so more than likely it will pay for a party.
