Mac Os Sierra runs slow. Can I fix it?

Since installing Sierra I repeatedly get the Spinning Ball of Death. This never happened before in previous Mac OS applications. What's the cause and how to fix please?

Secret technical term for that: spinning wait cursor. Causes include....

    – Corrupt file system. See 1st link below.

    – File / document you try to open is very large.

    – App you try to open is very complex or is verifying fonts as part of its launch processes.

    – Faulty or incompatible hardware, such as internal drive or external anything. To verify a whole drive, see the 2nd link below.

    – Storage is nearly full. Solution is trash stuff and empty the trash.

    – RAM is insufficient for your tasks. Use Activity Monitor to check memory use. See 3rd link below.

Another way to see what's up with memory (only useful after some hours of normal using the computer) is....

    1) – In a Finder window, press command shift G.

    2) – Type

    /var/vm

    and then press Return.

    3) – Type command 3 (to view as columns).

    4) – Trash all the "swapfile"s.

    5) – Empty the trash (Must be done after restart.

    6) – Use the computer normally for two hours, opening the range of apps you often use.

    7) – Do the first 3 steps above again.

    8) – Press command I (Info).

If the size is over 4GB, your computer does not have enough memory for your tasks. For older Macs, (pre-2013 for the most part), you can add more RAM up to the maximum for that computer model. For newer Macs, you had the option to pay for more memory at purchase of the computer, but nothing you can do now, except close some apps before you open others.
