Why do transgender persons need hormones or surgery?

I understand why transsexual persons need hormones and/or surgery. But gender is a cultural construct. Are people saying "transgender" because they think it is a polite word for "transsexual"? How do medical and/or surgical procedure effect a cultural change? There are after all flat chested ciswomen and cismen with breasts. So if "transgender" really is about gender and not sex, why don't people simply live according to their gender identity? If it is really about sex, then the word should be transsexual.

Update:

So far I am seeing many responses which seem to indicate that people think gender and sex are the same thing.

The majority of people who identify a "transgender" are not transsexual, and they do not desire HRT or GCS. There are a few transsexuals who don't like the word "transsexual", and self identify only as transgender. Most transsexuals, no matter how they label themselves, do not get HRT or GCS. Only a relatively few people in the trans community get HRT, and even fewer get GCS. Those who do ARE transsexual, regardless of which label they use.

The problem with "transsexual" is that its root word is sex, not gender.

The problem with "transgender" is that many conditions, other than the transsexual condition, use that umbrella term.

Because of severe body dysphoria which can be part of gender dysphoria. For example, I feel severely depressed to have breasts which don't belong. This chest dysphoria effects me all the time. I will be so much happier after the surgery. Even wearing anything tight across my chest can make me feel even more disgusted with my body that I am already.

A lot of transexuals call themselves transgenders, I think some of them prefer the word

Surgery or hormones are not necessary parts of a transition, but they do help a person feel more in line with their gender.

Its because in the case of those with dysphoria, the difference between their gender and sex causes them anxiety, thus, they want a sex change to match their gender and reduce the anxiety in their lives. There are those who are transGENDER, and have no issue being the opposite body than their gender.

Ive wondered this, too. And i think the only explanation is that it is simply a Mental Illness. And you cant always expect the thoughts/emotion ns of someone with such a Mental Illness to be rational.

Basically, they insist genitalia has zero to do with gender. That the concept of gender is made up by society and has no meaning at the end of the day. Only to turn around and pay out thousands to more physically resemble the gender concept they identify with. And we are expected to cheer them on the whole way, or else be called a "hate filled transphobe".

Its sad that this is what society is turning in to

Why does anyone born with a birth condition get treatment?

Transsexualism is a birth condition and transition is the treatment for it.

Just like anyone born with a birth condition, transsexual people have the right to correct their birth condition.

EDIT: "But gender is a cultural construct."

    Nope.

Gender roles are social constructs, but gender identity is not. Gender identity is an inborn characteristic.

Most people are born with a gender identity in their brain that matches the sex of their body, transsexual people are not. That's what transsexualism is, a birth condition. This leads to a life of pain and misery as their body feels profoundly wrong and nobody ever sees them as the person they truly are. Transsexual people transition (aka "sex change") to affirm their inborn gender identity by changing their body to match and assuming a gender appropriate role in society.

"Are people saying transgender because they think it is a polite word for transsexual?"

    IMO, yes.

I think a lot of transsexual people have shame issues regarding terminology.

False premise is false. Gender is not only a social construct no matter how many times you repeat that nonsense.

They don't. They just think they do.

It's a severe mental illness. Funny thing is they really do think they are the sex they choose to be, after getting butchered

Gender ROLES are made by society.

What they need is to accept they are either a boy or girl. Trannie trash
