Why do people call boys or girls a crush. To crush is to flatten or destroy, not a boy or girlfriend?

when they use the word crush they mean someone they have a crush on. the word has been used in this way since i was a kid so a good 50 years or more ,not sure why but there it is. it does not relate to a current boy/girlfriend just a desire to be their boy/girl friend.

Because the person you crush crushes YOU, you're under their thumb, so to speak, they seem to have cast a spell on you and you find it hard to get out of it

Crush can also mean a particular liking towards someone based off of looks or personality. So they say "I have a crush on someone" rather than saying "I like someone based off of their personality and or looks"

Because we must crush and destroy all that we love!
