If harsh criticism of the Bible is due to a flawed approach, what is behind harsh criticism of the Qur'an?

Christians have said to me, "You're failing to read with discernment", "You're taking it out of context", "You're approaching it with the wrong attitude", "You're just nit-picking and looking for problems", "You just want to go on sinning", and my favorite: "Duh!"

But what do you say about equally harsh criticism of the Qur'an? Is it justified? Why? Why different from the Bible? Please, don't say something that the average, peace-loving Muslim could turn around on you: none of this, "The Bible is just true" and "They worship a false god".

Seriously, what is the difference between my criticism of the Bible, of which you would so strongly disapprove that you would cast aspersions on my character and intelligence, and my criticism of the Qur'an, which you would wholeheartedly approve (or at least feel neutral about)?

Update:

Joel, an example: Jesus never once mentioned compassion as our motivation to treat each other well. Every chance he got, he hammered on punishment and reward. I get a lot of flak from Christians when I say this. But I say exactly the same thing of Muhammad, and I hear nothing from Christians. I have many other examples, but presumably you just needed an example to understand generally what I'm saying.

My view on the Koran is that the story is that the Jews and Christians got it all wrong and God sent Gabriel to Muhammad to give him the right info. And since Muhammad couldn't read or write, he told a friend what Gabriel said to him to write it all down. And after several times with Gabriel the Koran was born. My thought is Why then did God let the Jews and Christians get their messages wrong when it was the Holy Spirit that inspired those writers. Muslims then believe God made a mistake for yrs before Muhammad got it right. But God can't make mistakes. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Hi SR. Long time no see; I hope you are well.

Can you give particular examples? I'd have a hard time answering your question otherwise. I do believe that criticism of Islam can be unjust (I bristle a bit when they call Mohammed a pedophile), but I believe that some is justified.

Thanks, SR. In this case, I might side with those who disagreed with you (though I will try not to get sidetracked); but I understand the general thrust of your question. Is it possible that the reason why Christians were silent were because most Christians have not read the Qur'an? I mean no disrespect, but I myself have only read part of it so I would be unable to refute or agree with your assessment - I probably would have been silent also.

Hi SR. After reflection, I updated my reply to your "we don't disagree" summary, but the comments counter is stuck on 7 (and I can't view the reply on mobile). Just letting you know. Wishing you a good day,

Too much words, too little subtance, I don't know if you're a Muslim, Christian or Atheist, I don't see anything wrong with criticism of whatever you want to criticize.

Logic and knowledge and wisdom and discernment is behind Christian criticism of the quran.

They cannot see the hypocrisy in their position. Remember, with blind faith, one accepts the excuses for one's own religion, and does not accept the same exact excuses for all the "false" religions.

The Quran cannot be validated by objective science--it fails everytime.

The Bible and Quran are antiquated tools for stupid people.

And there are A LOT of stupid people

  • The unwritten belief of all religions is that they are better than all others.
