I imagine that the ore is much more dense (or less dense, either would work) compared to the other deposits around it, there would be more pull felt on the measuring device (recall that Newton's equation F12 = (GMm)/(r^2) says there is a measurable force between two bodies). This could give a rough estimate as to how much ore would be present.
