Why does my dog whimper in her sleep?

That is kind of my question i just couldn't it all in there. my whole question is why does my dog whimper in her sleep but never when shes awake. obviously you cant answer the question "what was she dreaming of" but im guessing it was something that scared her or made her uneasy. my other wonder is why she barely ever whimper when shes awake. the only times she does is when its thundering. was she dreaming of thunder? does it have to do with dog instincts, not to show emotion or something

and please if your going to answer don't say something lame like "i don't care" cause that's silly and really unappreciated :)

i think that dogs brains (when asleep) work the same way as humans! they sort out all the thoughts that have been going through their brain previously through the day! so if your dog has a strong fear of thunder that fear was over-riding her other thoughts filling her mind with those thoughts! :[ poor puppy. when she goes to sleep she is thinking of what might happen to her if she is caught off-gaurd! in her dreams she may be having nightmares of possible things that may happen to her or something like that!

i would suggest before she goes to bed comfort her with treats (only a few) and soothing sweet talk and calmly petting her! then she may relax more before sleeping knowing that you will protect her! then if she starts whimper if you dont wake her and pet her she may dream of something like the lighting is attacking her! i would wake her slowly and calmy soothe her back to sleep! after a while she will learn that as long as she is near the family she is perfectly safe. it is confindence booster i use on little kids too!

by the way whimpering isnt always a bad thing...she may be whimpering because she is enjoying a dream! maybe she is chasing a squirel and she is overly excited about it!

The sounds a dog makes when having a dream are rather different to how they sound normally. This is nothing to be concerned about. If you make sure all her waking time is filled with good situations, there's no reason to think she's having anything other than running, jumping and yes, vocal dreams. Leave her to her dreams.
