Duterte did wish to do this in the south. Threatened to bring in 3 divisions from the North to fight the Muslim rebels in the South. In a small area. He calmed down some. They are talking again with him. I have heard of no plans to bring the Government down. There is a million dollar U.S. reward out on him to any one to kill him. His motorcade has came under fire 3 times. They bombed his city twice to anger him. So Maybe it will happen in a small area. He is hard headed. It does happen in a few small cities in a way. If Government troops corner the rebels. They set up shelters first. Tell the good citizens to move to them before going in to fight the rebels. Both sides have heavy weapons at times. But the rebels do not have the power to bring down the Government. Or the public support to do so here. Most are no more than small bandit gangs hiding in the jungle. The Philippines is safe. Near as safe as Japan. Except for the Southern area Muslim majority area. There is no real power there to do so. Beutifull Country down there to see. Best beach's in the world, Mountains unspoiled. But not a tourist area. Very undeveloped for most part.

What do you expect from a muslim president that has killed over 7, 000 people on suspicion?

Bet you didn't know gloria declared Martial law in '08... Most people don't.

My point being... as Duterte said it is a Presidential power designed for the people's security.

Just because you heard or read the words "Martial Law" doesn't mean you have to go get your knickers in a twist.

Although I would agree that his national governance is pretty dismal.

The system there has always been very corrupt and Duterte hasn't changed that. The people who possibly could take him down are already in his pocket and being paid off.

That's not to say that martial law couldn't be enforced in the near future, but it wouldn't be for the reason you suggest.
