In chess, why do French people call the Bishop "fool"?

Or have I got it all wrong?

The French always surrender (resign) on move 1 anyway so it doesn't matter.

The Bishop is also known as the Kings Fool.

You sacrifice the Bishop, to save your king........making him the fool.

Jester in French, runner in German, elephant in Russian!

Older French chess books show the figurine of a jester with cap and bells to represent the piece we call the bishop.

Note to the TD ignoramus: all of the above info is correct. Try looking it up, or is that too much effort for you?

In France, they thought the grooved top of the chess piece looked like a jester's cap, jester is 'Fou de roi' (King's fool) and just 'fou' for short.
