A car travelling at 80km/h encounters a 1.2km long train moving in the opposite direction at 50 km/h?

What distance does the car travel while the train passes by?

So what I tried was dividing 1.2 km by 80 km/h and I got 0.024h. But I don't know what to do next.

The answer is supposed to be 0.74 km by the way.

    I was wrong. Since they are moving toward each other, their relative velocity is equal to the sum of their velocities. And the sum of the distances that they move is 1.2 km.

    For the car, d = 80 * t

    For the train, d = 50 * t

    Total = 130 * t

    130 * t = 1.2

    t = 1.2 ÷ 130

    The time is approximately 0.00923 hour. Let’s determine the distance each vehicle moves during this time.

    For car, d = 80 * 1.2 ÷ 130 = 96 ÷ 130

    This is approximately 0.738 km.

    For the train, d = 50 * 1.2 ÷ 130 = 60 ÷ 130

    This is approximately 0.461 km

    Total distance = 96 ÷ 130 + 60 ÷ 130 = 156 ÷ 130 = 1.2 km

    This proves that time correct. Sorry about by previous work!
