You could go to the TKTS site and it will list shows that have been generally available at a discount. Shows that recently opened and/or popular will rarely be available at TKTS.

And here's a couple of tips - while the Duffy Square (most people know it as Times Square) location is the most popular as it is the most visible, lines are much, much shorter at the Brooklyn and South Street Seaport locations. AND.....those locations will sell tickets for the next day if there is a matinee! The Duffy/Times Square location doesn't. Also, as tickets are released at various times through the day, lines are shortest an hour or so before showtime - that's also when House Seats tend to go on sale......

If you have a particular show you are interested in, I would just go ahead and purchase ahead of time to avoid waiting in line for a couple of hours.

If you just want to see a show and don't really care which one, then use TKTS. Otherwise, buy tickets in advance.

If you really have your heart set on a particular show, then you should buy those tickets in advance. The availability at TKTS is unpredictable, so you can't count on them having tickets to something that you want to see.

There are always tickets available at TKTS, and to good shows (not usually the biggest/hottest shows, or new shows though). So if you're just interested in getting a deal to a show, then it's not a bad way to go.
