Who has the advantage in a faceoff, the offensive or defensive zone player, and why?
I know the defensive zone player gets to put his stick on the ice first. Does that give that player the advantage because he occupies the best spot? Or does the advantage go to the player on offense, because he knows what his opponent will (probably) do when the puck is dropped?

Actually it's the visiting player who puts his stick down first. It's supposed to benefit the home team and normally home teams (over a season) will win around 52-53% of draws.
Having said that, face-offs don't really have much of an impact on scoring effects. A team winning 55% of draws over a regular season would likely only gain 6-8 goals over a team that won 50%.

The advantage goes to the center who sees where his opponents stick is placed along with his hands. Those indicate what he's going to try to do.
