Why do TV programs and movies show the credits for everyone from the people who carried the bags and to the people who wrote the story?

And they do this even if the program/movies is 60 years old and the people they are crediting are long since dead. I often look at movies and TV programs produced in the 1950's and before and the credits roll but it appears senseless to me to give credit to people who are probably gone from this Earth. So, why?

Hollywood is one of the few heavily unionized industries left in the US and there are specific guild rules for all these workers about how they have to be credited. So they've got to list and credit all the people who worked on the film, not just the stars and director and cinematographer, but the grips, the sound guys, the gophers, the drivers, the craft services company etc.

Yes, all those monuments and churches and statues and things should all be torn down. The people are dead.
