What would happen if I did the following?

I am a bagger at a grocery store. One day, a customer reported that there was a man eating cherries without paying for them. I asked the guy who was supposedly eating the cherries if he was in fact eating them, and he told me he was tasting them. What would happen if I interrogated him further, he grabbed the bag of cherries and ran out of the store, and I chased him down, tackled him, and called the police?

    IT CAN GO EITHER WAY

If the thief becomes injured you or the store can be

sued for damage. And you would likely be fired.

If you just grab him and restrain him without causing

an injury you may be hailed a hero by your boss.

On the other hand, your boss may instruct you to never

do it again out of fear that you may cause an injury and

    cause a lawsuit.

Ultimately if you cause no injury you will probably get to

    keep your job.

If you THINK you CAN do anything more than inform management, you LIED about working at a grocery store. Management makes it VERY clear YOU are not authorized to confront a customer in any way.

You'd be fired more than likely. It is not YOUR PLACE to do anything like that to customers, you should have IMMEDIATELY reported it to a MANAGER and them handle it and you sure as hell do NOT go chasing people out of the damn store! You WAAAAAY over stepped your bonds and because you don't know anything. You don NOT get paid to do what you did and the manager has better people skills and does know how to deal with people such as him. YOU CLEARLY DO NOT!

You would be fired for not following security procedures. Probably charged with assault and go to jail.

You would be fired. You wouldn't be helping the store save money after the guy files a lawsuit against the store for you tackling him. On top of that I bet the store has a policy, which you should know, that says to let the shoplifter go and let the police handle it. A lot of stores have a policy that allows robbers and shoplifters to go over putting up a fight(yes LP might approach a shoplifter and try to take them in to custody, but if the dude runs the store usually lets them).

    You would get fired.

I don't think you're permitted to tackle customers unless they were a threat so he would have the right to press charges for assault and sue you or the supermarket. That's what I think could happen, though I'm not positive.

Is all that worth it for a bag of cherries? You should let him off the hook for now, but if it becomes a common occurrence report it to your supervisor. No need for the police to get involved for such a petty matter.
