My boyfriend and I have been dating for 2.5 years. He wants to still wait to say I love you?

He wants to wait until he knows we are getting married for sure. We ve talked about it in the past and this is what he says. He doesn t want to say it to someone and then break up later. I don t know how I feel about this. What does everyone else think?

On the one hand he should know. After 2.5 years, a person ought to know if what they feel is love. Being in love has absolutely nothing to do with what will happen in the future.

Your are in love or you are not. There is no shame in saying so. In fact it's a very good idea to say so.

On the other hand, the word love is probably the most misused word in the English language. Some people have the idiocy to say

I love shooting. What in the world does that mean? How can you possibly say I love something that takes life? So he's right to be cautious about the use of the word. He wants it to mean something.

He's not right about believing that marriage is the only time the word can be used, especially if he's worried about a break up. Ask him what meaning the word love would take on if his marriage would end in divorce. Marriage does not prevent divorce. Nor does loving someone prevent divorce.

He doesn't love you and is looking for any excuse possible to avoid it. A man who is truly in love with the woman he is with will say it often and daily.
