how does voting work? i heard of something called electoral votes?

I thought that Hillary won the most votes, but Trump won the most electoral votes so shouldn't Hillary have won?

The popular vote does not directly elect the president. Instead, each state has a numner of electoral college votes equal to the number of federal legislators it has. The election is really 51 individual contests (since Washington DC also votes). Whoever wins the popular vote in a given state gets that states electoral votes. There are 538 electoral votes altogether and you need to get at lesst 270 (50%+1) in order to win.

You must be young. The popular vote is rarely a factor is presidential elections. The 1st candidate to reach 270 ELECTORAL VOTES wins. The popular vote only matters if neither candidate reaches the 270 ELECTORAL VOTES. Each state has a certain number of electoral college members. So when a state gets all their votes in, that number of the electoral college is awarded to that particular party. The system was developed so no party could dominate the voting system.

The electoral vote determines who holds the reign as president. Hillary only won the popular vote.

In the US, the electoral college is part of our Constitution. Each state picks electors based on number of Congressmen in the state. two senators and from one to 25 representatives, based on population. the electors vote for the president based on who won the most votes in the state. Mrs Clinton got more total votes from voting citizens. But Trump won because he got more votes in enough states to raise his electoral college votes over hers. New York and California voted heavily for Clinton. In my state, Pennsylvania, Clinton won in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but the rest of the state voted overwhelmingly for Trump. So he got all of the state's electoral votes.

i think the media 'told' you she had the most votes but in reality, even rigged which i think it was, the overwhelming voter turn out for Trump simply stomped her fat but into a mudhole ..

All that matters is the result from the electoral college -- that's how it has always worked.

It's the electoral votes that matter.
