Relationship advice?

So I've been talking to this guy off and on for almost a year. Honestly we have gone without seeing or talking because of me. One - I have two kids (girls) I rarely have a babysitter and I don't want to have my kids around him too soon. Two - due to my last relationship I have trust issues and fear of getting hurt worse than the last time smh. He continues to stay in contact even if its been a while he's always glad to hear from me. He understands how I am about my kids. He told me he's a family man and has suggested we go places with the kids but i haven't allowed it yet. He hasn't disrespected me or ask for anything....he only offers and even paid my phone bill when I told him not to.(I've never asked him for money but took a small amount it a few times) I like that we talk and he never text even if I text him he will call. OK so what's the problem? He was single for three years before we met. He doesn't look it but he's 30 years older than me..I'm 29....I think about him a lot even when i haven't talked to him and he's the only guy I've been with since my last relationship... The few others I talked to didn't make it passed a few phone calls lol.. But basically I'm not sure if I should get in a serious relationship with him due to the age difference and me not wanting to make a big mistake.
