Funny, but I was reading a book yesterday that says owning a pet, especially a dog, relieves stress and anxiety and lowers one's blood pressure. It came from a test to see if owning a pet helps people who lived alone cope with situations compared to those who lived only with a spouse. They did better with pets.

connecting with nature is a stress relief
owning a dog, cat or other pet that confines you, makes messes, and demands your time can cause stress and loss of the freedom to get up and just go, unless you like to be at home most of the time and don't want to travel
can also be a major expense
agree that puppies are really cute though

A dog sure does, and some cats might, but not just for Senior Citizens. For anyone.

I have 2 dogs and they offer more comfort and unconditional love than most humans I know. They are great stress relievers.
