Did ordinary people play polo in Los Angeles in the 1940s?

My dad who would be 90 now told me that on Sundays everyone would go to the polo grounds and for a reasonable price he would rent a horse and gear and get into a game. He would be assigned to a team and play for a few minutes. He had no polo training. Evidently you didn't have to. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

It was a common sport back then. Not unusual.

Polo and having horses to ride on the weekends was much more popular in the "olden days".
