I don't know where you live, and what environment you will be working in, but there are steel-toe shoes are worth their money if you're working with heavy objects, and there's also another kind with light steel coverage for your toes, but antistatic soles, which is important if you work in the electronics industry.
Better ask your employer which national standard applies. A pair of antistatic steel-capped shoes, here in Europe, cost no more than 40 to 50 euros.

Steel toe shoes are for those work environments where dropping heavy objects on your feet may cause injuries. Doesn't matter if on a concrete floor in a building or a dirt surface outdoors. Required by state and federal OSHA regulations. Otherwise, non-steel toe shoes are all that's necessary.
