Yes it absolutely does!!! Its a complete waste of time trying to control the crazy stuff that happens to pop up in your head. Thoughts themselves have all the substance of vapor. Our emotional reaction to the images in our head are what we need to pay attention to. Everyone human being has the craziest thoughts in the world and 99.9% of them just fly on by without us ever needing to do anything with them. When you think of something that creates fear, for example, you dont need to forcibly stop yourself from thinking that way to avoid being afraid (as if that were even humanly possible). Instead, what you can do is train the extremely adaptable human brain to react differently to the same mental image. With a fear or anxiety reaction that process is called stress innoculation, where you expose yourself to the thought or image continuously until you become desensitized to it.

A mistake people often make is struggling with negative thoughts, telling themselves "I must not think that." You don't have to struggle with them. See a thought as false or otherwise useless and it will go.

If you have a paranoid thought, ask yourself if there's any evidence behind it and it will go.

When you're stressed, the mind generates worrisome thoughts. So good stress reduction reduces these thoughts.

Well that depends on how you're trying to control them? You can tell yourself you're "just going to do it," but it's doubtful anything will really change because you're still functioning with the same biases and assumptions. If you compare the mind to a car, you constantly run with the same engine, wheels, etc. You can go at different speeds and but if it breaks down it breaks down unless you fix it.

Sometimes it's possible to control thoughts if they are the kind of thoughts that lend easily to being controlled but some thoughts are more persistent and more difficult to consciously control than others. Unless you actually change something about your thinking, gain new insight, change your biases and attitudes about certain things, you may be able to control somewhat how fast you go or maybe even alter the route you take a little bit, but eventually you're still going to get to the same place. And if the thoughts are too persistent or the kind that don't lend easily to control, trying to directly control them consciously may be as futile as trying to get a broken car to run by just slamming on the gas pedal.

Basically you can try, but if it doesn't work and you don't give up to try something else you might very well exhaust yourself and become even more fixated on the problem. If it doesn't work to just try to control your thoughts by sheer force of will then stop trying to do it that way. Reflect on these thoughts, identify which biases and attitudes maintain them, and try to change those. In other words, if you want your car to run differently or be fixed you are going to have to change some of the actual components.

If you get stuck and can't seem to identify which attitudes and beliefs are maladaptive or can't figure out what healthier ones to replace them with, then seek out a mentor or go to counseling. Counselors are trained to help you gain insight and to help you gain more control over your thinking and emotions. Many times in order to accomplish real change you can't just snap your fingers or will yourself to be different. You need to learn what's causing you to be the way you are, what other ways there are that may be better, and what steps you need to take to get there. Many times this also requires some help from others who have some kind of higher awareness about the issues you're dealing with and some ability to teach others about how to accomplish the changes they are seeking to make.

In fact, Albert Einstein said that "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." So no, trying to control your thoughts most likely won't make your anxiety worse until you can tell that it's not working. If you keep trying to do it the same way after this realization then yeah, at some point you are probably going to get more anxious. But anxiety isn't usually a bad thing. It can be the clue and motivator to do what you probably should do: try something different.
