A Hunch is not completely correct. As long as you are working for the college or university in a student-classified job, work study or not, the wages are not subject to FICA. The example of a Dunkin' Donuts job is correct because the employer is Dunkin 'Donuts, not the college/university.

Employers MUST withhold income and social security taxes. Whether or not you pay income taxes is determined at the time you FILE YOUR INCOME TAX RETURN. It isn't the job of the employer to determine whose income is subject to taxes or not.

False.
If it's just a job that happens to be on campus, then you would pay FICA taxes just like if that job was off campus. Even if it's a job through the school, you would pay FICA taxes.
- Example: There is a dunkin donuts on your campus and you work there = you would be responsible for FICA taxes.
- Example: If you got a job at the campus library that is not related to your financial aid work study = you would be responsible for FICA taxes.
The only jobs on-campus that are exempt from FICA taxes are if it's part of a formal Federal work study program and you are a full-time student working less than 20 hours a week.
