Why don't Alaska and Hawaii have the same time zone?

Seeing as most of Alaska and Hawaii are in the same time zone in regard to daylight, why don't the two states share their own time zone?

A couple decades ago they did have the same time zone. However, nowadays Alaska is just one hour behind Seattle. It provides less jet lag when traveling, and live TV programs don't have to be time delayed.

They do, it's called Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time. The only time they're different is that Hawaii doesn't recognize Daylight Savings Time. They have plenty of sun, they don't need extra hours!

Never expect time zones to make sense. They are not drawn purely geographical; they are political, and therefore illogical.

Driving, a one hour change zone to zone is reasonable. So Alaska is one hour different from the next time zone in Canada. When you fly or take a ship it really does not matter so Hawaii has a more appropriate time for its more westerly location.

Because the earth is not flat.
