Hello people. Does anyone know about Coldingley prison? Do they have toilets in their cells for lifer prisoners?

I haven't been there so I don't know, but "Inside Time", the prisoners' newspaper, says this:

"A–D wings, hold 91 prisoners each, mainly in single cells. None of these cells have in-cell sanitation and prisoners gain access to recesses through an electronic unlocking system.

E wing has 115 single and eight double cells with much better accommodation including in-cell sanitation.

F wing was converted from the old health care inpatient facility and is the enhanced, wing. Tthe 10 occupants are able to leave their double cells to use communal toilets as needed."

HM Prison Inspectorate has commented on the lack of in-cell sanitation - it is now unusual for prisons not to have it and the inspectors commented that "this is a matter of priority". As for the wings that do not have it, the inspection report says "In these units, prisoners had access to the toilet when they were locked up through an automated unlocking system, which allowed them to leave their cell one by one for eight minutes at a time to visit communal toilets. This system was fundamentally disrespectful: sometimes prisoners had to wait a long time to use the toilet and had to resort instead to using buckets in their cells without being able to wash their hands afterwards. The system had broken down three times in the previous three months. These difficulties were exacerbated by the plumbing being prone to blockages – in the first week of our inspection, 24 blocked toilets were reported."

The report is dated March 2017.

You go where you are sent, you don't have a choice. As for Coldingley, look it up.

Coldingley is a Category C prison in Surrey and the cells do not have toilets.
