Do hospitals and/or urgent care clinics ask if you work after checking in?

Hospital ERs have to take care of you regardless of your financial status. However they are allowed to check to see if you have insurance and since most people get it thru work, asking if you work is a fair question. Urgent Care Clinics are not ERs and they do not have to take care of you unless it is life threatening, such as you drop over dead in their lobby. If you have no insurance and do not work, they can ask for payment up front.

"Place of employment" is one of the questions on the paperwork you have to fill out when you're admitted. Most medical insurance is provided through your employer. If you're not employed, just write "none" or "retired", and then hand them your medical insurance card.
If you don't have medical insurance, an urgent care clinic won't refuse to treat you, but they'll probably insist on full payment up front. A hospital will admit you without insurance, but they'll send you a bill you after you're discharged.

They will ask for all your information, and "place of employment" is on the list. But they don't turn you away if you say "None."

They generally ask for proof of insurance, but if you don't have insurance, hospitals still have to provide you care.

They will want your insurance information. Where you work is probably not relevant.
