Are the Westboro Baptists a religion or a money making scheme?

Since they are all lawyers I sometimes wonder if their who getup is to pretend to be insane raving mad people and then sue people for interfering with their religious freedom

Neither. Those Westboro people are not Baptists at all. They formed a cult some years ago. They are a congregation supported outfit.

"The WBC is not affiliated with any Baptist denomination, although it describes itself as Primitive Baptist... Baptist-affiliated seminaries, and Baptist conventions, including the Baptist World Alliance and the Southern Baptist Convention (the two largest Baptist denominations), have denounced the WBC over the years. In addition, other mainstream Christian denominations have condemned the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church."

It depends really. Some Westboro Baptists are genuine believers of God, while others are wolves in sheep's clothing.

Probably both. In my view of Christianity as seen in some of its manifestations in the USA there is no conflict between religion and money.
