Which is true: A) It is a people who make up a nation or B) It is a nation that makes a people?

Example:

You take all the Japanese out of Japan and move them to Haiti while taking the Haitians out of Haiti and move them to Japan.

Would the Haitians start wearing kimonos?

Would the Japanese start eating dirt cookies?

The people make up a nation without a doubt. If your example happened, Japan would turn into Haiti and Haiti would turn into Japan.

  • They're both true.

People make a nation. If you transported all of the Japanese to Haiti, for a time they would likely live exactly as they did in Japan. After a while, their cultures would meld, and a new nation would be born.
