Each summer, we drive across the Hudson River to Bard College and its conservatory of music. Winton Marsalis and his ensemble run a TOP level jazz workshop for teens. This is at an incredibly high level. We are both career music educators and professional (classical) musicians. We are big jazz fans as well. And we hold an incredible amount of professional admiration for WM - as we do for Dudamel and others who not only work at a high musical level themselves, but work tirelessly with students. Your question has come up a few times here. I think that a teacher, tv show, or article is jealous. Like some Little League coach who never made the majors, and tells his kids that those who did, are phonies. Yeah, right . . .

In what way could Marsalis have hurt Jazz? The man is considered one of the best trumpeters since Louis Armstrong. He won two grammys in the same year, for (jazz and classical) recordings. He taught jazz at Julliard. He was over the New York Jazz concert band. He has conducted numerous Jazz workshops all across the country. Has traveled world over playing Jazz concerts. He has worked with young people here in his hometown of New Orleans. So you me, how has he hurt Jazz?

Why on earth would you even think that he would ever hurt Jazz. With all his countless contributions.

This one is a diamond in the rough. The whole band took it all back to the bayou with this rarity when he and the rest sings. Certainly shows the depth he has with this composition. Love it because it's raw to its roots.

Re comment: I am compelled to deal with collegiate art people pretty frequently - I am a professional, this not being music, just art/design. "But I am PURE!!!!" What do THOSE people know of TRUE art! If it sounds bombastic it's because it is. And I just keep chugging away in my business while they play at it. Just laugh. As someone once said, "I never got a degree so I didn't have to get over the art school indoctrination."
