The temperature changes by 47.4oC when a half-mole of propellant undergoes complete combustion with excess oxygen in a bomb calorimeter. The large calorimeter has a heat capacity of 6,230 J/oC and contains 3,600 g of water. Calculate the ΔU (in kJ per mole) for the propellant.

(4.184 J/g·°C) x (3600 g) = 15062.4 J/°C for the water
6230 J/°C + 15062.4 J/°C = 21292.4 J/°C total
(21292.4 J/°C) x (47.4°C) = 1009259.76 J = 1009 kJ = ΔH
Since no work was done, ΔU is also 1009 kJ.
